Chemmart and CSIRO
collaborate on weight
A clinically tested weight loss program,
Impromy – developed by pharmaceutical
manufacturer Probiotec in collaboration
with the CSIRO – has been launched in
The weight loss program aims to
help combat the growing prevalence
of obesity in Australia by providing
a tailored, face-to-face service
Executive Director at Chemmart,
Jonathan Layton, said the way Impromy
was structured – including point-of-
care testing and ongoing personalised
support – meant Chemmart was ideally
placed to deliver the program.
‘Impromy is unique because it uses
trained pharmacy consultants,
supported by a custom built platform
through GuildCare, to create a tailored
program for each individual. Impromy
also incorporates other health measures
such as blood pressure and cholesterol
testing to ensure it supports a complete
health and wellbeing program –
something that Chemmart Pharmacies
are particularly well placed to deliver,’
Customers would be supported by
regular one-on-one health review
consultations with an in-pharmacy
consultant; a CSIRO developed smart
phone app which provides ongoing
support and personalised feedback;
and an expert telephone and online
help service. Integral to the program
were nutritionally advanced meal
replacement products, a range of
Impromy snacks and a CSIRO developed
eating plan detailed in the ‘Meals for
Living Simply Well’ recipe book.
The program was formulated based
on clinical trials and would continue
to evolve as research reveals new and
better ways to help customers reach
their optimum health. To this end,
part of the funds from Impromy would
go towards further CSIRO research to
help fine tune the program.
Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB will produce one billion
international units (IUs) of clotting factor therapy for humanitarian aid
programs in the developing world.
The companies made the
announcement at the World Federation
of Hemophilia (WFH) 2014 World
Congress. Initially, they have committed
to donating up to 500 million IUs to the
Federation over five years to support
its efforts to raise the standard of
care for people with haemophilia in
the developing world. The remaining
500 million IUs of clotting factor will be
made available for future distribution.
The donation is expected to enable a
predictable, sustained humanitarian
supply of factor therapy and improve
the quality of patient care and outcomes
in the developing world. Haemophilia
is a rare, chronic, inherited disorder in
which the ability of a person’s blood
to clot is impaired and can lead to
recurrent and extended bleeding
episodes. According to the WFH, an
estimated 400,000 people worldwide
are living with haemophilia and of these,
more than 300,000 individuals live in
areas where there is limited access to
diagnosis and treatment.
‘All of us at Biogen
Idec are dedicated
to making life
better for people
Biogen Idec CEO
‘Haemophilia occurs all over the world,
and this donation will provide some
level of care to thousands of people
who otherwise would not have access to
The commitment of one billion IUs of
factor is intended to enable physicians
to treat more than 75,000 joint
bleeding episodes, more than 2,000 life
threatening bleeding episodes as well as
conduct thousands of elective surgical
procedures that would not be possible
without access to clotting factor.
