Tolmar launches product
Tolmar Australia has launched into the
Australian market with the aim of being
the country's premier urology company.
Its first product, Eligard (leuprorelin
acetate) is indicated for the palliative
treatment of advanced prostate cancer.1
A further 2--3 more products are
expected to be launched in the next
couple of years.
Sydney-based, Tolmar operates in parallel
with Tolmar Inc, the global entity that
invented, developed and manufactures
Eligard. Both Tolmar Inc, US and Tolmar
Australia are members of the South
American Tecnofarma group.
Dieter Torheiden, has
30 years of experience
in the pharmaceutical
industry, 11 of them
in Australia is General
Manager of Tolmar
Australia. He has
spent the past year
getting the company off the ground in
He told Australian Pharmacist that after
having worked with big pharmaceutical
companies such as Solvay and Abbott
he was looking for 'a smaller job' and the
challenge of getting the company up and
running had been exciting and satisfying. It
had not, however, turned out to be smaller.
He said that working with the small
staff of 12 people and getting back to
delivering service and care, not just
profits was interesting.
'It is satisfying to look back and see what
we have achieved so far,' he said.
In late March Tolmar launched Eligard
NurseCARE, a national program providing
the administration of Eligard and health
checks in line with existing treatment
plans performed by a qualified nurse, at
a time and location that suits the patient.
The service, run by AESIR Health on behalf
of Tolmar Australia, is provided free-of-
charge to patients and prescribers, and
according to the company underscores
Tolmar's commitment to improving
quality of life in prostate cancer.
Mr Torheiden said that the Eligard
NurseCARE program was unique in
Australia and was designed to integrate
with existing treatment plans to simplify
patients' journey of care.
'The service offers 24-hour telephone
support for patients and regular reporting
back to the supervising clinician. It is one of
several important initiatives we are pleased
to be able to provide to the urology and
Eligard is an injectable subcutaneous
gel that is available in four dose options
-- one, three, four or six monthly --
providing flexibility to tailor a treatment
regimen to suit men's individual needs.1
Tolmar Australia offers a dedicated
toll-free number (1800-TOLMAR) to
access medical information on Eligard.

Macular Degeneration Awareness Week:
One in every seven Australians over
the age of 50 shows some evidence of
macular degeneration (MD). Pharmacists
are uniquely positioned to draw attention
to the risk factors, prevention strategies
and treatments for MD, according to
Macular Disease Foundation Australia
CEO Julie Heraghty.
The impact of macular degeneration
on quality of life is equivalent to cancer
or coronary heart disease. It prevents
healthy and independent ageing and
is associated with the increased risk of
falls, depression, hip fractures and earlier
admission to nursing homes.
Ms Heraghty said this made it important
for pharmacists and their staff to know
about this disease and provide customers
with vital education. 'By ensuring staff are
familiar with macular degeneration; the
signs, risk factors, importance of prevention
and early detection, your pharmacy can
take a proactive approach to raising
awareness in the at risk group," she said.
Ms. Heraghty said the Foundation
(www.mdfoundation.com.au) was able to
provide free resources that pharmacists
can provide to customers to assist in
education and understanding.
