Pfizer sponsors fresh
Pfizer Australia launched a quarterly business newsletter, Pharmacy
Business Insight, at last month’s APP conference.
The company is sponsoring the
newsletter as a vehicle to provide
examples of business success stories
and how they can be applied to help
pharmacies thrive in a period of change
and will provide pharmacists with a
fresh approach to help them respond to
the changing healthcare environment.
Each quarter, the newsletter will bring
together insights and case studies from
key opinion leaders in pharmacy and
beyond, with a focus on healthcare.
Gareth Richmond, the Pharmacy
Commercial Lead for Pfizer Australia
said: ‘Pharmacy owners are operating in
a markedly different environment than
five or 10 years ago, with accelerated
price disclosure and the long term
impact of discounting posing many
challenges for pharmacy owners.
‘At the same time, we are seeing an
ageing of our population and an
increase in chronic diseases such
as diabetes, obesity and asthma.
Pharmacies have a key role to play in the
effective prevention and management
of these conditions. It is therefore
critical that pharmacists have a deep
understanding of the major trends and
issues driving the changes that impact
The topics explored by Pharmacy
Business Insight will be chosen by an
editorial committee of pharmacy and
non‐pharmacy experts – chaired by
Peter Switzer, one of Australia’s leading
business and financial commentators.
Mr Richmond said: ‘It’s imperative that
pharmacy owners make considered
decisions and take action about the
future to ensure sustainability in the
critical role they play in the delivery of
healthcare in Australia and the support
they give to patients every day.
‘ Through Pharmacy Business Insight we
hope to further assist pharmacists to
understand those challenges, and to
benefit from timely access to leading
views and ideas.
Editorial committee member and
pharmacy business consultant,
Bruce Annabel, said the newsletter
will help pharmacists consider
their current situation and make
suggestions on how they can look at
other ideas and approaches for their
‘ There are opportunities in pharmacy
but many owners are not looking for
them because they are thinking in terms
of the old dispensing model.
‘ The case studies in Pharmacy Business
Insight will assist them in preparing their
businesses for a more health service
The newsletter is edited and published
by Switzer Financial Group and
distributed to pharmacies.
NatRUM board appointment

Mr Tassone, the Pharmacy Guild of
Australia Victoria Branch President, takes

Plunkett said: ‘We look forward to
Anthony’s valuable contribution,
passion and enthusiasm in ensuring the

in enhancing medication safety in the
‘On behalf of the NatRUM board, I would
also like to extend our gratitude to
Dipak for his significant contribution
over the previous seven years –
including as chairman.’
Mr Tassone said he was thrilled to join
the NatRUM board.
‘ The NatRUM project is one of the
most cost‐effective and unheralded
preventive healthcare initiatives in
our community. There is currently a
proposal before the Commonwealth
Health Minister for ongoing funding to
ensure the continuation of the program
until at least June 2015. I cannot stress
enough to all fellow pharmacists,
health professionals and Australians
how crucial this program is to ensure
medication safety and prevention of
medication related hospitalisations and
incidents in the community’.
