Pharmacy hearing clinics
To help combat hearing loss, Discount
Drug Stores, together with Australian
Hearing, ran free hearing clinics in more
than 100 of its stores between January
Professional Services Manager at
Discount Drug Stores, Casey Clark,
said that because hearing loss occurred
gradually, many Australians were often
unaware that there was an issue until
the condition affects their quality of life.
With hearing loss most common
among elderly people, with one in two
people aged over 60 suffering from the
condition, Discount Drug Stores aimed
to raise awareness of the problem and
the need for Australians to have their
hearing tested regularly.
'Regular testing is vital to ensuring
hearing problems are picked up and
treated before permanent damage is
done, Ms Clark said.
'If caught early, those affected may only
need to make small lifestyle changes
in order to prevent further loss, such
as turning down their iPod, wearing
ear plugs at concerts or implementing
additional safety practices in industrial
work environments. However, if people
wait until significant damage has
occurred then often only the more
invasive and expensive treatment
options are available -- such as requiring
a hearing aid or a cochlear implant'.

Chemmart stocked the limited edition
Colour for a Cause teal nail polish
pack, developed in partnership with
Designer Brands, throughout Ovarian
Cancer Awareness Month (February).
The product was exclusive to Chemmart
with 100% of proceeds going to OCA to
assist in delivering its awareness, support,
advocacy and research programs.
Chemmart staff across the country
also offered in-store manicures where
customers could have their nails painted
in return for a gold coin donation. Money
raised was being passed on to OCA.
Executive Director Jonathan Layton said
the company has supported OCA since
its inception 13 years ago and over that
period the pharmacy chain has raised
more than $1 million to assist them.
'Chemmart pharmacies across the
country have really got on board
with Colour for a Cause, encouraging
customers to get involved and show
their support for OCA. I was one of the
first in line to get my nails painted and
would recommend other men and
women to do the same!'
CEO of Ovarian Cancer Australia Alison
Amos said: 'Our vision is to save lives
and ensure that no woman with ovarian
cancer walks alone, so we are very
excited by Chemmart's latest initiative.
We are particularly thrilled to see men
coming out to support their sisters,
wives and mothers and hope to see
more of it throughout the month'.
