Interestingly, the unpublished UC
survey of pharmacists showed that less
than 20% of community pharmacists
consulted a reference before providing
travel health information. There is no
single textbook in travel health that is
appropriate for Australian pharmacists.
The most current information sources
are internet-based. Table 1 provides
selected authoritative websites for travel
health information useful to support
decision making in travel health service.
The websites were selected based on
their content, target audience and
adherence to standards of internet
publishing. Information on the websites
was current at the time of writing.
In addition to these resources,
collaboration with other clinicians
completes the loop to prepare travellers
of various segments such as children
under 12 years of age, people preparing
for extended periods of travel and
those preparing to travel last minute.
Pharmacists must be aware of the
clinical triggers that indicate when
clients should be advised to see their
doctor or other healthcare professionals
for a travel health management
strategy. If referral is chosen, it should
be in writing as a standard practice.
The Professional Pharmacy Group (PPG)
of the International Society of Travel
Medicine (ISTM) is a useful resource
for pharmacists (www.istm.org).
The group provides opportunities for
networking and information exchange
for pharmacists with an interest in

field continues to evolve, based on
growing body of health information,
there is still no recognised speciality.
Clinicians offering travel health services
are not 'board certified' in travel health.
Instead, travel health practitioners are
credentialed in other areas such as

The counselling guides are a useful source of information
in community pharmacy practice when patient presents
with a problem the pharmacist may not be sure. The
handbook provides an assessment criteria and trigger
for referral. The section on travel health is a useful point
to start with some useful travel health links provided for

Handbook 10th Edition 2013
The handbook provides a pre-vaccination screening
checklist, a guide on preparing anaphylaxis response kit,
guides for planning catch-up vaccination for international
travel specifying the routine, required and recommended
vaccines for travel. Revised every three years. Online
version updated between plications.
The Doctors Reference site
Australian travel-related data. Includes links to the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT),
Smartraveller and destination vaccine requirements in
the Travel Doctor (TVMC) and Travel Clinics Australia.
