NAPSA is Bendigo bound
By John Traynor
The National Australian Pharmacy Students' Association (NAPSA) Annual
Congress is the biggest event on the Association's calendar. It runs from 25--31
January. The congress is a week of Educational and Networking Sessions.
As Chair of the National Australian
Pharmacy Students' Association (NAPSA)
Congress Organising Committee for 2014,
it gives us great pleasure to announce
that the 2014 Congress will be hosted in
Bendigo, Victoria. The NAPSA Congress
has never been hosted in Bendigo, and
we are excited for the opportunity to
bring Congress 2014 to our home in
The 2014 Congress will be a great
opportunity to showcase our university,
the city and surrounding attractions.
When the Bendigo Congress was
advertised at the most recent Congress
in Tasmania, delegates were very excited
and keen to have the opportunity to visit
Bendigo, and rural Victoria.
Bendigo is Victoria's third largest centre
and presents as a unique experience
for all delegates involved. The 2014
Congress allows us to showcase 12 years
of talent coming from pharmacy
graduates from Bendigo. We are able
to utilise a range of local speakers who
all have successful careers in different
aspects of the pharmacy profession.
Victoria's demographics allow us to
provide delegates with an insight into a
wide range of pharmacy career options
including research, hospital, military and
rural to name a few.
The Bendigo Congress Organising
Committee is also committed to
continuing the NAPSA Congress Trade
Hall. The Trade Hall seeks to provide
product and service information, as well
as career opportunities to the future
pharmacists of Australia. Individuals or
organisations interested in connecting
with delegates through this forum
are invited to contact the organising
committee to discuss arrangements for
Pharmacy students have always
benefited significantly from the
networking opportunity that NAPSA
Congress provides, with friendships and
professional connections formed that
would never otherwise have occurred.
This year more than 250 delegates from
16 branches spread across different
universities around Australia will travel to
Bendigo; as well as representatives and
speakers from a wide section of industry.
The NAPSA congress provides delegates
with the opportunity to interact and
participate in professional development
outside of the university.
I would also like to thank and
acknowledge those who have already
committed to supporting this conference

Accelerated price disclosure
NAPSA has added its opposition to the
government's decision to accelerate the
price disclosure process.
National President, Xavier Agostino said if
adjustments to pharmacy remuneration
are not made to offset the impact of the
government's price disclosure, pharmacy
students are likely to be one of the
'NAPSA acknowledges that price
disclosure is required to ensure the PBS
remains sustainable, however it must
be implemented in a way that does not
undermine the viability of community
pharmacies which are the principal
employer of pharmacy graduates. The
government's failure to accompany
this price disclosure with appropriate
adjustments will force many pharmacies
to stop hiring interns and young
pharmacists in order to withstand this hit,'
Mr Agostino said.
He said that pharmacists' ability to expand
into a wider array of professional and
primary health care services would be
curtailed, again reducing the likelihood
that they will employ young pharmacists.
