NEW – 2012 OFFSHORE REFRESHER CONFERENCE
London 2 – 9 May 2013
Excellence in education
PSA Offshore Refresher
Every Offshore Refresher Course is noted
for its special tours and social events.
The history, culture and architecture of
Istanbul provided the opportunity for
some special events indeed. The ‘Ottoman
Night’ was held in the depths of the
famous 1001 Direk Cistern, a fourth
Century water reservoir, built beneath the
famous Blue Mosque and fortunately now
free from all but the slightest evidence
The spectacular Gala Dinner was held
at the Esma Sultan Mansion on the
shores of the Bosphorus, a remarkable
location for celebration built within
the ruins of a 19th Century brick palace.
An unforgettable experience at the dinner
was the highly spiritual whirling dervish
ceremony of existence.
After the main conference, nearly
200 delegates continued on to Troy,
Canakkale and Anzac Cove. A moving
wreath-laying ceremony was held at

Participation in the Jack Thomas Quiz
(JTQ) is always a popular aspect of the
Offshore Refresher Course. This year a
record number of 177 delegates entered
The JTQ was established as part of the
Refresher Course in 1994 in recognition of
the contribution made by Professor Jack
Thomas to PSA’s continuing education
programs, and in particular the Refresher
Course. The Jack Thomas Trophy, and now
the newly minted JT Medal, is awarded
each year to the delegate who is most
successful in completing a quiz based on
material presented during the conference.
The quiz consists of 60 multiple choice
questions and a case study.
Winner this year was pharmacist
Stephanie Hood from Queensland.
Stephanie is currently putting her
pharmaceutical knowledge to good
use as a resident medical officer at the
Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.
Equal second, just one correct answer
away in the eagerly fought contest, and
completing a clean sweep for female
pharmacists, were Jane Waller, Suzanne
Milne and Susan Hood (yes, Stephanie’s
mother - clever family!). Of the previous
15 winners of the JTQ, six (Des Lardner,
Frank Payne, Cathy Beckhouse, Dianne
Kassapis, Anne Borgna and Liz Bajusz)
were present this year and were also
presented with their medals.
It’s London in 2013
London has been chosen as the
main venue for next year’s Offshore
Refresher Course (2–9 May). There will
be pre-conference workshops and
tours to Lisbon and North Portugal,
and the beautiful and historic spa town
of Bath. Post-conference, there will be
an opportunity to stay at the luxurious
Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country
Club in Hertfordshire and/or sail the
Mediterranean for seven days on one of
the magnificent Seabourn Cruise Ships
(ask someone who cruised this year how
much they enjoyed it).

Coordinator Bill Horsfall with Jack Thomas Quiz Winner
But why London?
Been there and done that? We don’t think
so; certainly not the way it will be done
next May. Sure, many (most?) pharmacists
would have been to London, but how
many will have stayed in anything like the
five star accommodation of the Grosvenor
House Hotel in Park Lane or have been
received by the High Commissioner
at Australia House? We’re liaising with
the Royal Pharmaceutical Society with
regard to the program and the clinical
presentations will, as usual, will be of the
very highest quality, but also, as with
every Offshore Refresher course, the
events will be unique and we will visit
places where you will have never been
and are never otherwise likely to be
able to go.
Knowing of PSA’s intention to be in
Britain next year, the Mayor of London
has ensured the city has been renovated,
rejuvenated and transformed, with the
Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games
just a prelude to, and an audition for, the
