Merz Pharmaceuticals/Health One
Merz Pharmaceuticals, has launched a
new Aloe Vera formulation Mederma,
which is a proactive gel for scars.
Mederma is a clinically tested formulation
which promotes the skin healing process.
According to Merz, it stimulates healing
below the surface of the wound and
continues to work even after the wound
itself has closed over. This is important
as this deep mending can actually
influence the visible look of the scar
that results on the skin surface. It also
effectively reduces redness and makes the
scar softer, smoother and more elastic.
Mederma can be applied to scars caused
by accidents, burns, moles post-removal,
insect bites and surgical events, as soon
as the wound has closed. The aloe vera
in Mederma improves effectiveness, with
a moisturising, soothing effect on skin.
According to the company Mederma is a
greaseless, proactive gel. An Australian
survey showed 61% of people surveyed
prefer a gel treatment for scars over an
oil based treatment because gels are
greaseless, convenient and easy to use.1
Gel formulations don’t run, so targeted
application to the scarred area is easy.

Biogen Idec is helping
MS patients adjust to
the maintenance dose of
interferon beta-1a (Avonex) with a new
titration kit. In a 2011 study* titration was
shown to significantly reduce the severity
of flu-like symptoms (FLS), a common
treatment-related side effect in MS,1 by
76% (4–6 hours, p<0.001) following a
three week titration period.2 The study
also showed that the reductions in FLS
severity were observed 12–15 hours
postinjection by 37% (p<0.001) following
a three week titration.2 Flu-like symptoms
are generally worse during treatment
initiation and attenuate over time in
patients on interferon beta-1a therapy.3,4
The Avostartclip device has a ‘collar’ on
top of the device so that the Avonex
prefilled syringe injects pre-set doses.
