With Nicotinell patches and gum, there's more than one way to stop the
cravings that make quitting hell.
Tobacco use is the most preventable of
chronic disease risk factors but not to
those who struggle to quit. Although
smoking claims about 16,000 Australian
lives each year1 and its harmful effects
are recounted repeatedly in public
health campaigns, about 2.8 million of
us continue to smoke daily.2,3
Community pharmacy is as much a
part of everyday life for all Australians
-- with their higher morbidity and
comorbidities, smokers are even more
likely to visit your pharmacy than
non-smokers. This provides prime
opportunity to build the customer
relationship and leverage it to start a
conversation about quitting.
And as any lapsed quitter will tell
you, smoking cessation doesn't end
with awareness and contemplation --
continued counselling, encouragement
and motivation is crucial support that
grocery channels can't offer and in
which pharmacy excels.
Combined support for
Nicotinell now supports you in supporting
your customers to quit tobacco for good
-- 'It's time to escape quitter's hell' is a
program that combines NRT patches with
gum to combat the withdrawal symptoms
that usually undo a would-be quitter's
best intentions and efforts.
Combining nicotine patches with a
rapid delivery form of NRT was found
34% more effective than a single form
of NRT, according to a 2012 Cochrane
Review that looked at interventions as
varied as oral lozenges, inhalers and
nasal sprays. When gums and patches
were combined, the chances of quitting
were increased by 75% compared to
Nicotinell patches can provide up to
24 hours of relief from nicotine cravings
and when everyday triggers such as
stress prompt breakthrough cravings,
Nicotinell gum is on hand to deliver fast
nicotine to maintain abstinence.
Customers commonly choose one form
of NRT, so conveying the importance
and proven advantage of combination
NRT is where pharmacist expertise in
counselling can make a real difference.
Not only is the customer armed with
professional reassurance and support,
they also maximise their chances of
staying a reformed smoker, and invest
more loyalty in the source of that advice.
• Apply the Nicotinell patch to clean,
cool and dry skin that is hairless, every
24 hours -- or remove before bedtime
if vivid dreams affect sleep.
• Chew Nicotinell gum slowly until its
taste becomes strong, then 'park' it
between your gums and cheeks for
30 minutes to absorb the nicotine.
When the taste fades, repeat the chew
and park steps for 30 minutes.
