App Xplains Parkinson’s
Medicine X, an initiative that explains medical information to patients
in their own language, and at their own level has released a free app –
Parkinson’s Xplained – written by doctors for patients with Parkinson’s
It is the first of many planned apps for
aimed at explaining conditions, in plain
language, to those suffering from them.
Medicine X was set up by a group of
doctors with the aim of informing,
empowering and educating patients.
Dr Kim Chilman-Blair, Founder and
CEO of Medicine X said that up to 80%
of medical information provided by
doctors to people with complex medical
conditions was immediately forgotten.
‘Pharmacists are ideally placed to fill these
gaps. We would like to see the Parkinson’s
Xplained resource handed to every person
who fills a prescription for a Parkinson’s
medication,’ Dr Chilman-Blair said.
All of Medicine X content is written by
doctors, co-authored by graphic novelists
who understand how to specifically
engage with the adult audience, and are
then peer reviewed by the top consultants
in the field.
Parkinson’s Xplained can be viewed
online or ordered on a USB at: www.
parkinsonsxplained.com.au or downloaded
at the App Store or Google Play.

I absolutely LOVE being a pharmacist.
Let me tell you why!
How many health professionals do you know that can wake up every day and say “I can fix that”,
or “I can change that”, or “I REALLY made a difference in that person’s world today!”.
We see more people EVERY day (particularly in community pharmacy) than any other health
professional could dream of seeing! How many more opportunities do we get to touch the lives
of people!? How lucky are we!!?
My love of being a pharmacist has a little bit to do with the ‘access’ factor that I mentioned
above, but A LOT to do with the ability of our profession to be delivered a challenge, change
and then innovate. We don’t give ourselves enough credit for how resilient we are in an ever-
changing environment. But, I’m going to try and give it a go with a couple of examples that are
close to my heart!
Challenge: changing remuneration for community pharmacies
Change: reposition pharmacists in the pharmacy to make a bigger difference to health
GradCertDiabetesMgmtEd GradCertPharmPrac DipMgmt CertIVTAE
Innovate: let’s throw in some amazing health interventions like screening for disease
states, or a public health initiative like pharmacist-led immunisation services, or a public
health awareness campaign around a disease one of your dearest customers is suffering
from and BAM- massive health impact!
Challenge: lack of diabetes education services in your area
Change: do more diabetes medschecks, connect people with limited available services
Innovate: study and become a diabetes educator, give the education direct to the
customer as they walk into your pharmacy bewildered about the NDSS form and
metformin script they have just been handed. Stroll through your local supermarket with
your customer and make diabetes less intimidating in a dietary sense.
Challenge: not enough pharmacists
Change: a large early career pharmacist workforce
Innovate: new roles in GP clinics, professional services and beyond!
We are a changing workforce, which adapts to challenges every single day. We take a
challenge, make the change and then find incredible ways to innovate and expand our role.
How amazing are pharmacists!?
I being a pharmacist because...
