The PSA Offshore Refresher
Course next year celebrates its
40th event -- its ruby anniversary.
Since the very first Refresher in
Noumea, delegates have enjoyed the
highest-quality pharmacist education
in locations from Macau and Malta to
Vancouver and Venice.
Thousands of pharmacists have travelled
to the amazing locations that Refresher
has offered -- and for every Refresher
there are hundreds of stories.
To mark the 40th anniversary, Australian
Pharmacist is keen to hear some of the
best stories, anecdotes, and travellers'
tales from all the previous Refresher
conferences and we are asking you to
send us your memories.
These memories may range from the
dramatic to the humorous or even one
of bizarre situations which seem to be
part and parcel of travel.
We are interested in words and/
or photos so please send them to:
The story/photo judged the most
interesting will win a prize of a free cabin
on the 2015 Post Conference Dutch
River Cruise worth $5,000.
Travel opens the mind
By Andrew Daniels
The life experience of just being at a PSA
Offshore Refresher Course should not be
Much has been written about the great
education programs that come with the
PSA Offshore Refresher Course -- and it is
all correct. The education is first class.
However there is another less tangible
benefit of going to refresher, one that
has been around and recognised for
a long time. That is -- travel broadens
Having been overseas, travellers always
come back with a new perspective on
the world. I have covered a few Refresher
Courses for Australian Pharmacist and
one example of the impact travel can
have on perceptions stands out.
It was during the 2009 Refresher
Course to Scandinavia, Estonia and
St Petersburg in Russia. While in
St Petersburg we all visited the
Hermitage Museum, a magnificently
opulent Palace built by the Tsars to rival
the palace of Versailles in France.
We walked in and were faced with
an enormous white marble circular
staircase with gold trimmings. At the
time I was standing behind a group of
extremely successful pharmacy owners.
Faced with this awe inspiring sight one
of them commented that, 'when you see
this you can understand why they had a
Experiencing the opulence of Tsarist
Russia broadened his understanding.
It could be argued that travel helps open
those attending Refresher Courses to
the new ideas and information in the
education program because every day
of the Offshore Refresher Course they
are face with new experiences, sights
and sounds outside their usual comfort
zone and expect to be saturated with
new and different information.
It's the quality
As Education Director of the Offshore
Refresher Conference for 'about 18 years'
Peter Carroll has a good feel for why
delegates find the event so worthwhile
'It's the quality of the presentations and
presenters -- and the relevance of the
topics,' he said.
'I have been an integral part of the
Refresher Conference, both as Education
Director and as a presenter and I have
come to know what people want and
value in the conference.
'What is important to them is that the
education we provide is of the highest
quality. We go out of our way to make
sure we have the highest quality topics
and the highest quality presenters.
'We also go out of our way to make
sure that the topics we have on the
program are relevant to those attending.
We want delegates to be able to take
away messages and tips and be able to
apply them to their practice as soon as
they get back. The information we give
them is information they can out to
Mr Carroll said that the locations of
the Refresher Conferences were an
attraction but he believed it was the
content of the education program which
was the main drawcard.
'This is what keeps people coming back,'
'We have 97% attendance at the
education sessions so that shows
that this is why people are coming to
'Yes they are held in very nice places
but the feedback we get is that the
exceptionally high quality of the
education is the drawcard.
'The formula of Refresher works, and
works very well. It is high quality and
high relevance. That ticks all the boxes'.
